Beyond small spaces

In my own spiritual walk, I often find myself resonating with the story of Zoar, as told in the Book of Genesis. Like Lot, who sought the comfort of the small city instead of bravely venturing into the mountains as directed, I too experience moments where I yearn for the safety of the familiar, hesitant to embrace the larger plans God may have for me. This narrative has become a personal metaphor for the times when God calls me to step into greater roles, and I find myself wrestling with the fear of the unknown and a sense of inadequacy.

At the heart of this struggle is the fear of stepping out of my comfort zone. The ease and safety of staying small, much like Lot’s choice of Zoar, are often more appealing than facing the challenges of a larger calling. Yet, I am constantly reminded of God’s promise in Isaiah 41:10, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This assurance is a beacon, guiding me to overcome my fears and trust in God’s greater plan.

Embracing God’s call invariably leads to growth, a truth I’ve learned through my own experiences. Each time I’ve taken a leap of faith, stepping out of my Zoar, I’ve discovered new strengths and depths in my faith. These moments of trust, though fraught with uncertainty, have been pivotal in deepening my relationship with God. They are vivid reminders that spiritual growth often occurs in uncharted territories, beyond the confines of our comfort zones.

In those times of doubt and hesitation, I turn to prayer, seeking strength and guidance. Praying for courage and a heart open to God’s leading is a practice that has sustained me. It mirrors Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, as recorded in Luke 22:42, where He submits to God’s will despite the looming challenges. This act of surrender, though difficult, is a powerful step towards embracing the call to something greater.

The journey of answering God’s call, despite initial reluctance, is filled with a unique joy and fulfillment. It’s a path that, while challenging, is rich with divine purpose and lessons that could only be learned through obedience and trust. The experience of moving beyond my personal Zoar has shown me that the rewards of following God’s call far outweigh the comforts of staying within the familiar.

My ongoing spiritual journey is a testament to the delicate balance between the human tendency to seek safety and the divine call to embrace something bigger. It’s a continuous learning curve, teaching me to lay down my fears and embrace the adventures and blessings that come with following God’s larger plan for my life. In this, I find the true essence of faith – stepping out of the boat, away from my own Zoar, and walking towards the fullness of what God has in store.
